Check out what you can Purge in AutoCAD 2009

I will throw a little party when Autodesk renames the Purge command.  It makes me imagine my AutoCAD file is putting it's finger down it's throat and retching into the toilet.

However, Good Little 'Deskers know that a regular Purge of your drawing files cleans it from all that detritus that slows down performance, causes file corruption, and just makes it, well, run better and more regularly.  Purge acts like fiber in your diet.

In 2009, AutoCAD has the added ability to purge Materials, Multileader Styles and Visual Styles.

So What's to Trust in 2009

Autodesk introduced the concept of the TrustedDWG, battled it out in court and lost.

2009 users will now see a dialog that alerts them that are opening a "Foreign DWG file" ...making it sound like the file is an illegal alien that crept over the border.

Of course, at issue was whether users could "trust" the content of the file and the word trust no longer appears in the dialog.  However, the TrustedDWG icon still lives on the tool tray in the lower right corner of your screen.  If you mouse over the icon, the words Autodesk TrustedDWG appear for files created and saved in AutoCAD.

If you regularly swap files with non-AutoCAD users, just enable the option to 'Always open DWG files regardless of origin'.   This will turn off the annoying warning dialog.

 Kill the Ribbon Panel
Old-time users will hate the new ribbon panel in AutoCAD 2009.  I can only see Lynn Allen getting excited about this one...everyone else is going to be demanding their old toolbars (which take up considerably less space and make it easier to locate your tools.)  I don't want to have to go searching through Autodesk's latest reorg of my software.

Luckily, you can restore your workspace to the old AutoCAD Classic, get back the toolbars and banish the ribbon panel.
