Getting Back Control of your Named Views
In AutoCAD 2009, the toolbars have changed.  But the Views toolbar has not improved.  For some inexplicable reason, Autodesk decided to remove the Named View control that allows users to select any named views from a drop-down list.

I have to tell you that when I have a drawing where I have named views (this is a feature I will use when I have a large-size drawing, like a building facilities layout) I do not want to have to pull up the Named Views dialog every time I want to switch to a named view.

Having that drop-down list available is key to making named views work for me, so losing it was not an option.

If you use Named Views and you want the ability to select Named Views using the drop-down list, download this FREE quick tutorial.  I'll walk you through what you need to do.  It takes less than five minutes and will save you hours of aggravation.

2009 Tool Tip Help

If you hover your mouse over any tool icon for more than a few seconds, you will get more help than you probably could ask in the terms of a good-size graphic that shows you exactly what the tool does.

Newbie users will find the extra help extra friendly.  Old-timers will find it extra annoying.

To turn off the Rollover tooltips...type ROLLOVERTIPS on the command line and set it to 0 to turn it OFF.

You can also go to OPTIONS, select the Display tab, and disable the Show Rollover ToolTips option on the left side of the dialog.
Killing the Quick Properties Dialog

With every new release of AutoCAD, there are the annoying new tools that old-time users can't wait to turn off.  AutoCAD 2009 introduces several of these intrusions...including an even more annoying Properties dialog called "Quick Properties".

Users who use the shortcut Ctl+Shift+P to perform screen captures will be even more annoyed, because that is the default shortcut to enable/disable Quick Properties.

To turn off Quick Properties, right click on the Quick Properties icon in the Status Bar (this is a new addition in 2009) and uncheck Enable.
