So Who Did I see at SolidWorks World?

None other than Lynn Allen.  That's right, folks, AUGI sweetheart and Autodesk Evangelist Lynn Allen popped into SolidWorks World.

I was eating lunch on Monday when I spotted her. (I had already been told by my sources within SWW that she had registered for the event, along with two other colleagues.  Autodesk opted for the 2 for 3 deal SWW was offering.)

Lynn and I chatted later in the week.  I can't say that she was having a great time at SWW.  She definitely felt like an outsider and wasn' getting anywhere close to the adulation she gets at AU.  (neither do I, but I like being able to just blend in with the crowd.)

Beyond that, I think it is pretty cool that SolidWorks has no problems letting Autodesk employees attend their party (and at the discount rate, I might add).  I am sure Evan Yares (who was barred from AU this year) would chime in on this one.

LEGO - Step Aside for VEXplorer

At the Monday General Session, Rexell came on stage to show off their VEXplorer product...a remote contol robotics kit aimed for the 10-12 year old market.

Even if you don't have a kid, you might be interested in this kit because included is a FREE fully licensed seat of the student edition of SolidWorks.  That is pretty neat.  I don't know of any other construction kit/rc model out there that comes with CAD software.

Saving to the Design Library with VISTA

I don't believe in reinventing the wheel, so if I create a feature, like a hole pattern or loft, that I know I will be reusing in other designs, I will save it to my design library.

I am running SW2008 SP1.1 on my laptop with Windows Vista operating system.  When I tried to save my hole pattern to the design library, I get an error message..."unable to save".

I check the folder and it is set to "Read Only".  I try to disable it and the read only label continues to stick.

Frustrated I run a searth on the internet and get this link on how to disable the read only setting on folders in Vista.

Apparently, Vista sets all user created folders as Read Only and makes it extra hard for that setting to be disabled to protect users from malware.  In this case, they do such a good job, they interfere with users' ability to actually be productive and use their computers.

What the link does not tell you is 1)  Close down SW when you make the change and 2) you have to reboot before Windows will see the change.

The folder will still display 'read only' in Properties, but SW will now allow you to save to the design library.

Since Inventor has a similar set-up with their Feature Library, I would expect that Inventor users with Vista will have to do the same thing.
