A Standard Format for 3D
My tale of woe of trying to get a 3DS model into SolidWorks garnered tea and sympathy from readers across the globe. More than one reader expressed the hope that my article might have caught the interest of any 3D CAD software company out there and shone a spotlight on this problem. We are only just starting to enter into the 3D domain, so this problem is only going to get worse until a standard is established.
From Kent Wold, in Ontario, Canada -
This is a problem I ran into when working as a CAD Lab Assistant to my Instructor while in school a couple years back at IVCC in Illinois (I am currently working in Ontario Canada)... I even tried to use 3DS Max as a way to import export..not sure what our results were at that point.. but somehow we managed to do it.. I think we used some of the capability of 3DS MAX to export to another more compatible system..maybe ProE? or IGES?? Can't remember now..it was long and involved..and I am far from sure that it worked! Maybe we could use SketchUP for a default export to and import from file format?
Thanks for bringing this up..your high profile should allow for this to become a topic of the software people (AutoDesk, SolidWorks and ProE) for they all need to work on this one!
Probably be an outsided open source project that will make it work.. have you tried Blender?
Well, Blender looks pretty cool, but looks to be more for the 3DS crowd than the mechanical group, although I saw some architectural models in the gallery on the website. Even better, Blender is FREE, so if your interests lie in that direction you should definitely check it out.
More feedback in next week's issue. |

Double-Click to Edit Dimensions
You can change the double click function for dimensions from "properties" to "ddedit" . Mine used to pull up the properties box for a double click. I just changed the command and now it works fine.
- Open the CUI - In the Top-left pane: - Expand the Double Click Actions tree - Expand the Dimension tree - in the Bottom- Left pane (command list:) - find the Text, Edit... entry and drag it to replace the Properties option that's under the Dimension tree in the top-left pane

Metric or Standard Units?
Last month I posted a survey for my readers where I posed the question of whether I should write my texts using Metric or Imperial units. Thanks to all who responded. I especially enjoyed reading the comments people wrote.
From Portugal -
Inches are only "standard" in UK and US :-).
From the US -
Let's convert the world to our way of thinking.
From Britain -
They will be assimilated.
I also got an email from a reader who said something to the effect that he couldn't believe that someone who is as forward-thinking as I am could possibly still be using Imperial units. That had to be the most back-handed compliment I have received in a long time.
Metric took the most votes in the survey, so next year's textbooks will be joining the global community. |
