Adding a Checksum to your Data Files
I was introduced to this software through one of Autodesk's blogs.  Accuhash is a Windows 95/98/Me/NT/2000/XP/2003 utility for protecting the integrity and verifying the accuracy of data files using a checksum.  It will allow you to easily and quickly verify integrity of files downloaded from the Internet, transferred over a network and/or burned onto CD/DVD.

I became familiar with checksums back in the 80's when I burned firmware for small boards.  The checksum value indicated whether the firmware was loaded properly.

However, when you send a data file over email or through an ftp site, the only way most of us can verify that the file is OK is by checking file size and date.  This isn't always 100% foolproof.  So, if you are exchanging large files, adding a checksum to the dataset is a pretty nifty way to make sure all is well.

At $20 for a license, I would say this little utility is worth it.

New Webservice from Autodesk
One of my biggest complaints about dwf is the fact that most of my customers have never heard of dwf.  They don't want to install new software in order to use dwf because it requires that they fill out twenty-gazillion forms, get them signed off and approved by management and then wait for the IT guys to finish their coffee break so they can install it.  By the time they actually are able to use the dwf software, the project is over and the need for it is also long-gone.

Autodesk has heard my rant...so they have established a new webservice where you can upload your project files, create a link and then email it to your customer.  No more need to install software and they can view your files on-line...no hassle, no waiting.

I expect if it gets too popular Autodesk may initiate a subscription fee, but that would be OK as well.

Still on the Fence as to whether or not to attend AU?

OK, some of you may still be hemming and hawing as to whether or not you should attend Autodesk University.  After all, it's not like a lot of us have $1700 laying around for the registration fee (this includes classes,  meals and hotel) and not every company is willing to fork over that kind of cash for what is essentially a training conference.

So, let's recap...if you took a 4-day class from your local reseller it would cost about $800, maybe a little more.  So AU is almost double that cost, plus you have to fly, sleep in a strange bed and deal with the non-stop ding-ding-ding of those noisy slot machines.

BUT...only at AU will you get the VARIETY of classes and people...it is like a 3D Wikipedia of all things Autodesk.  This is your best chance to meet some of the most awesome 'deskers in the business.

You just can't put a price on that.

But, if you are still on the fence...click on the link below and print out the schedule of classes.  Highlight all the classes you want to take with a yellow marker (chances are you will fill up more than four days worth), then take the marked up schedule over to your boss and say "THIS IS WHY I NEED TO GO TO AU."

Then, pack your bags and get ready to go.
