Those of us a certain age may recall the days when
appliances were also furniture. Stereos would have a
wood finish, often walnut or cherry. Radios took up
the entire corner of a living room and had claw foot
feet. Even refrigerators and stoves would have brass
fittings and claw feet. Telephones featured curlicues
and gold trim.
So, it may be no surprise, or maybe it is, that some members of the X generation hunger for those days when appliances could be deemed works of art. A movement, called Steampunk, takes monitors, keyboards, computer towers, and other modern devices and reworks them to recall those days of yore. Looking at how these industrious Gen-Xers have created these works of art, I can only admire their inventiveness and wish I had half their ability. It goes back to a very simple principle...a box is just a box. It can be as decorative or as plain as you like. You do not have to give up functionality to bring beauty into your world. |

If you use Autodesk software and have never attended
Autodesk University, you need to experience it at least
once. This is the Mecca event for all 'DEskers.
Picture over 4,000 CAD users in one location talking
about all things CAD over a week-long period, filled
with classes, parties, and networking opportunities.
Held November 27 - 30, 2007 at the Venetian Resort Hotel in beautiful Las Vegas, you don't want to miss this wonderful event. I have attended six times, so I won't be going, but that doesn't mean you should miss out. My good friend, Beth Powell, will be teaching there this year and you certainly don't want to miss her class! If you are an AUGI member (and membership is free!), you can get a small discount and if you are the President of your local Autodesk User group, you should be able to get a free pass through AUGI...check it out. If you are in a local user group, there is a special AUGI deal where three people can attend for the price of two...what a bargain! I plan on attending SolidWorks World down in San Diego in January. I like going to a conference that is totally geared towards the mechanical side of engineering. I am looking forward to meeting the new SolidWorks CEO. |

Lennart Ekelund, from Sweden, emailed me asking
for a very simple lisp routine. He wanted to find the
002-part of "Text with 002 inside", and then draw a line
from 0,0 to the insertion point of the actual text strings.
I have modified the lisp routine slightly here to prompt the user for the text segment to search for. It then will draw a line from 0,0 to the text. It also would be fairly easy to make the located text "light up" by changing the color or layer. The code is fully commented, so you can download it and change it for your own use. |
