CAD News....Large and Small
Elise,
Welcome to 2007...let's hope 2007 brings joy, prosperity, good health, and good times.
Fiddling with Express Tools

I got an email from a fellow recently who was trying to get Express Tools to work in his seat of AutoCAD.

First, you should know that Express Tools does not always get installed (depending on your installation)...you need to select Custom during the installation and select the Express Tools module. If you forgot to do that, you can go to the Control Panel, locate your installed seat of AutoCAD and modify the installation to include Express Tools. (You will need your installation CD). If you use the Modify/Update method, you do not have to re- register the software.

If Express Tools is installed, but you don't see the Express Tools menu, you probably need to load the menu. You can do this using MENULOAD. Locate the express tools menu (acetmain.mns) in the Express folder under your AutoCAD installation.

If the Express Tools menu is loaded, but you see ? in the toolbars or the tools don't work, you probably need to reset your file path under your file options to include the Express Tools folder.

If you get an ACET ERROR INIT when you try to use the Express Tools, it means that the menu has not been loaded properly or the menu file has been corrupted. You can go back to the Control Panel and do a Repair on your AutoCAD installation to fix that error. Be sure to have AutoCAD closed whenever you are running a repair/update on the application. Also, turn off any virus checking software.

If all this fails, you may have to reinstall AutoCAD with the Express Tools enabled under the Custom option. If you perform a re-install, make sure you export your license so you can re-import it after the installation.

I am more than happy to provide free technical support to users, but if the user is trying to work with an illegal copy of the software, then I really can't help them because all of my answers assume the user has the CD and is legal. I do not provide workarounds to help users "crack" Autodesk software.

Mark Your Calendar

January 18th I will be heading up to Autodesk San Rafael to make a presentation on Revit for the Marin AutoCAD Users Group. It costs nothing to attend, so if you are looking to network with some other 'Deskers, get a free look at Revit, come on by. The meeting starts around 6 pm.

The AUGI Board of Directors have said they will come to the meeting, so this is your chance to meet this great group of people and put in your two cents of what services you would like AUGUI to provide in the coming years.

Autodesk Retires 2004

Folks working in AutoCAD 2004 can join the ranks for those no longer able to get an upgrade...after March 15, 2007. Watch the price to upgrade from 2004 to 2007 drop as you get closer to the 15th. Savvy shoppers, note....AutoCAD 2008 will be released on March 16, 2008 or shortly thereafter.

So, to get the most bang for your buck, wrangle with your reseller a low upgrade price at the beginning of March and have him throw in a subscription at an additional charge...that way you will be able to go direct from 2005 to 2008 with no hassle.

Is 2008 worth the price of an upgrade? Without saying too much, I will say YES, absolutively. With the 2008 release, Autodesk returns to what they know best....2D drafting tools...look for some wonderful new tools and enhancements to existing tools.
