Dear Elise,
Ashlar Vellum has launched a program where you can pay about $160 per month to use their software. If you have a short-term project, or have hired a contractor, this could be an appealing way to bridge the software resource gap.

You can rent and lease Autodesk software as well on monthly, quarterly, and even yearly terms. Contact your local Autodesk reseller for details on how that works.

In Inventor, a quick way to start a new part, assembly, etc. file is to select the little down arrow next to the blank page New icon on the standard toolbar and simply select the type of file you want to create. It sounds so simple and it is. I love it!

In SolidWorks, there is no quick drop-down...instead you have to press the blank page New icon and then select from a dialog. How about if you could create your own toolbar flyout that worked the same as the Inventor drop-down and even allowed you to select from your own templates? That would be, as Matt Murpy would say, wicked cool. Luckily, SolidWorks does have the ability to let you do that kind of customization.

I'll be taking API training for SolidWorks in Camden, MA in September. I am hoping I learn all sorts of neat tricks and then pass them on to you...so stay tuned.
One of the things I find annoying about Inventor (R10 and above) is that there is no easy way to save the colors library. Yes, you can export a color - ONE color at a time...tediously, time consumingly, brain- numbingly.

So, back in R9, I exported the colors library (you used to be able to do it) when I saw I couldn't do it in R10 and saved the file. Now, I have a colors library (Heaven help me if I ever lose this file!) that I can import for use in any part file.

Learn how to import a colors library and download my colors library file in the link.
