  • Greetings!

    No Direct Links, Please

Loyal readers of Shaan Hurley's blog may have noticed that recently he has taken to adding the line (no direct links, please) to some of the content he posts on his pages.

No direct links, for those of you who are not Internet- savvy, means that some bloggers, websites, etc. may find content on Shaan's blog that they like and then post a direct link to that content. So, you go to their website, select the link and go directly to the content with no idea that Shaan (and Autodesk) is the source.

Shaan's objection, I presume, is 1) he isn't getting proper credit as the source of the material; 2) others are getting "free" content for their blogs/websites/whatever with no work on their part and 3) the point of his blog is for you to read his version of "the truth" and if you just go direct to the content without reading the editorial whatever, you are getting the content out of context which is not fair to him or to you - the user.

Of the objections, I think the "free content" is probably the most understandable. As the Internet has proliferated, poaching content from one site to another has also increased exponentially. I find articles I have written on sites I never knew existed. There is a huge hunger for content and people don't want to pay for it (or can't afford to).

I have told resellers, user groups, etc. I don't care if they pass on my tutorials, tips, articles, etc. I understand the need for content and the urge to poach. I only ask that the poacher acknowledge me as the author and let folks know they can come to my website, etc. if they want more.

My biggest concern is the loss of content. I can't tell you how many routines, tutorials, shareware programs, etc. have been lost because the webhost went belly up. So, I tend to download the content and store it on my website. I try to give people credit for their efforts when I can.

Use SCALELISTEDIT to customize your Scale List
You can add, delete and modify items on the scale list for your viewports.

Simply type SCALELISTEDIT on the command line. Then use the dialog to make the needed modifications.

    Undo Zoom and Pan
By default, when you use the Zoom and Pan and then press UNDO, any previous zoom or pan commands are combined. This can be annoying to some users who would like to use undo (instead of Zoom Previous) to back up a display.

To un-combine the Zoom and Pan undo, go to Options. Select the User Preferences tab. Then disable the Combine Zoom/Pan Commands option on the bottom right of the dialog.

OSNAPZ - new System Variable introduced in 2006
OSNAPZ controls whether object snaps are projected onto a different plane parallel to the XY plane of the current UCS based on the current elevation.

0: The Z-value is used from the specified point selected with the object snap

1: The Z-value is substituted with the current value in the ELEV system variable for the specified point selected with the object snap

Why the Layer Dialog Loads so Slowly
When opening a drawing in AutoCAD and starting the Layer Manager, the dialog box can take a long time ( up to a few minutes) to load. In previous releases of AutoCAD, with the same drawing, the Layer Manager opened instantly.

A large drawing file or a drawing file with a lot of layers can cause the Layer Manager to display slowly. The Layer Mananger scans every layer in the drawing to determine if there are objects on the layer so the correct icon is displayed.

You can speed up the amount of time it takes for the Layer Manager to load by disabling one of the options on the dialog.

In the lower left corner, uncheck the Indicate layers in use option.

How the Layer Filter Alert Works
Users with alot of layers often will define layer filters to make it easier for them to navigate around their drawing.

The LAYERFILTERALERT system variable controls the behavior of removing layer filters out of a drawing automatically. If a drawing contains over 100 layer filters and the number of layer filters exceeds the number of layers the system helps to improve performance by dealing with this excessive number of layer filters.

Set LAYERFILTERALERT to 3 and you will have the best option.

The 3 setting displays a dialog when opening a drawing with more than 100 layer filters, allowing the user to select from a list which layer filters should be deleted

    The FILTERS command
The FILTERS command brings up a dialog that allows the user to select what layer filters should be retained in order to speed up the loading of the Layer Manager.

    The DIMARC Command
2006 introduced the new DIMARC tool that allows user to dimension the length of an arc.

    What is Shrink Wrap?
During an ADT presentation at the March CAD Camp, a user asked "What is Shrink Wrap?"

I thought that was an inspired question. Shrink Wrap is the object used for the sectional plane when you create elevation or sectioned views. So, say you are slicing through a building - how do you want the wall to appear on the cut edge?

You can control the appearance of the shrink wrap outline and hatch in different display representations using the Display Manager and by editing the Object Display.
