Readers were understandably confused when I blasted
AutoCAD 2007 but raved over ADT 2007. So, let me
explain the perceived disconnect.
Just about all the new features in AutoCAD 2007 are 3D
tools...you pay for these with a slower load at launch,
less real estate on the screen, and a general slow-
down on refresh rates. When I use AutoCAD 2007, I
don't work in 3D - I work in 2D. So, I am being
annoyed by all the extra 3D gew-gaws I don't need and
inconvenienced to boot.
Now, when I work in ADT, I am in 3D and I want all
those 3D tools. The new Visual Styles tools -
awesome, but even better, the improvements to the
Style dialog, the way structural members work, etc. all
adds up to a more fun way to get the job done.
Working in ADT, I am already used to the slow-down
when in 3D mode and am willing to deal with it because
the tools make it worth it.
Because the company I work with is in the broadcast
industry and television stations are not really investing
in CAD, I am not recommending to this company to
move to 2007. 99% of their CAD work is in 2D and
AutoCAD 2006 is more than sufficient..however, if I was
in a different industry, in a different company, I have
no doubt I would eagerly be jumping over to 2007.
Even though we won't be upgrading, I will be renewing
the company's Autodesk subscriptions in the hopes that
the next release will have some improvements that
meet our needs.
