Explaining Myself

Readers were understandably confused when I blasted AutoCAD 2007 but raved over ADT 2007. So, let me explain the perceived disconnect.

Just about all the new features in AutoCAD 2007 are 3D tools...you pay for these with a slower load at launch, less real estate on the screen, and a general slow- down on refresh rates. When I use AutoCAD 2007, I don't work in 3D - I work in 2D. So, I am being annoyed by all the extra 3D gew-gaws I don't need and inconvenienced to boot.

Now, when I work in ADT, I am in 3D and I want all those 3D tools. The new Visual Styles tools - awesome, but even better, the improvements to the Style dialog, the way structural members work, etc. all adds up to a more fun way to get the job done. Working in ADT, I am already used to the slow-down when in 3D mode and am willing to deal with it because the tools make it worth it.

Because the company I work with is in the broadcast industry and television stations are not really investing in CAD, I am not recommending to this company to move to 2007. 99% of their CAD work is in 2D and AutoCAD 2006 is more than sufficient..however, if I was in a different industry, in a different company, I have no doubt I would eagerly be jumping over to 2007.

Even though we won't be upgrading, I will be renewing the company's Autodesk subscriptions in the hopes that the next release will have some improvements that meet our needs.

AutoCAD 2002 and Inventor R7 Retired on March 15, 2006

Autodesk has announced that you will no longer be able to pay to upgrade AutoCAD 2002 and Inventor R7 after March 15, 2006.

If you missed the deadline, you can still upgrade at a discounted price under the Legacy Program, but not at the same cost savings.

Every March when Autodesk releases the next set of software products, look for older products to be retired.

Convert DWG to DWF in a Hyperlink

One way to make it easy to surf from one drawing to another is to use hyperlinks. Simply set a hyperlink in your drawing to text or some other object.

In 2007, you have the option to automatically convert any DWG hyperlink to a DWF. That seems pretty nifty to me, but some users may become confused about why there is a slight delay when they click the link. The delay is caused by the time taken to create the conversion and launch the DWF viewer.

Two Camera Tools Now in ADT 2007

ADT users may be confused when they go to create a video in ADT. A camera tool is available on the View toolbar and on the new Dashboard. This is NOT the camera tool that is used to create videos or walk-thru animations.

That camera tool (called AEC Camera) is located on the Massing Tool Palette.

It might have been better if one camera had been called Snapshot and one Video or something similar to help users distinguish between the two tools.

Users should be aware the cameras have different short-cut menus and only the AEC Camera allows you to create a video.
