New Capabilities for Structural Members in ADT 2007

I really like the improvements in structural members in ADT 2007.

My favorite is the new ability to MITER. Simply select a beam. Right click and select MITER. Then select the adjacent beam. The two beams are automatically trimmed and fitted together. Sweet!

Next favorite is the improvement for braces. Select the brace tool, set the angle or distance in the Properties dialog, select the column, then select the beam. The brace is automatically placed in the correct location and trimmed properly.

My third favorite improvement is the ability to array columns or beams on the initial placement. Simply set Array to Yes in the Properties dialog and provide a number or distance. Saves multiple steps and you can preview as you place.

You also can now set structural members to be constrained or unconstrained. This effectively glues members together, so if you move them, they will move together. I haven't played around alot with the new constraint feature, but I can certainly see the value.

All these improvements add up to a valid reason to go to your boss today and ask to be put on subscription and upgrade your ADT software.

ADT 2007 Adds New Abilities to Wall Styles

When you define a wall style in 2007, you can now set whether or not it is structural or not...I think it might have been better if they had said "load bearing" and even cooler, if you could calculate how much load the wall could hold based on the components selected...but, baby steps...maybe in the 2008 release?

MTEXT Improves in 2007

The MTEXT dialog has been further improved in 2007. You can access symbols now with a click of a button on the MTEXT toolbar. Previously, you had to right click in the MTEXT window to access symbols.

I started my consulting business in 1994. We create lisp routines, visual basic programs, mechanical design, engineering documentation, and light architectural drafting. I have a couple of junior drafters who work for me (including my son, Daniel) and my other son, Ben, helps me with IT work.

This free ezine is an alternative for Autodesk users looking for advice and guidance from another user. We promote Autodesk products, but are always looking for alternatives, add-ons, and other software/hardware to make our lives and the lives of our readers better.

I am not affiliated with Autodesk. However, there are several Autodesk employees and resellers who are supportive and helpful to me...I would mention their names, but I don't want to get them into any trouble.

Sincerely,
