Visual Basic & AutoCAD

At the beginning of February, I presented a class on using Visual Basic with AutoCAD to the San Francisco AutoCAD User Group. I was warmly received and it was good to see so many familiar faces.

As usual, I used a real world scenario. I had a collection of project drawings that needed an attribute in a titleblock changed. I wanted to change the project title so that it was the same across the project. Rather than do it by opening each drawing and tediously making the change, I opted to write a VB program where the user selects the drawings to be changed, the new title, and let the program do the rest.

The program, written in Visual Basic 6, is heavily commented. You can download the zip file, which includes my powerpoint presentation along with the program files.

You can then modify the program to work with your own titleblock and attribute.

Converting Leaders from Lines to Splines

Israel Rangel Ramos from Fremont, CA emailed requesting a lisp routine to convert multiple leaders from straight lines to splines.

I could see value in a routine like that...how many times have I gotten a drawing from someone where they used straight line leaders when spline leaders were more appropriate? I had tediously redrawn the leaders and used my copy text lisp routine to copy the text values.

As usual, the lisp routine is heavily commented so you can modify it to work the way you like. It is pretty basic. Select as many leaders as you like to convert from straight line to spline. The text values and all other properties will remain status quo.

ProgeCAD LT 2006 Now Available

ProgeCADLT has recently been released. This is the best deal on the planet, I think. It is FREE. The license never expires. It reads, writes, views, prints in DWG format. It comes with a block library that is awesome.

My company gives away free copies of this software to customers who don't have AutoCAD, but they want to be able to view, print, or make minor changes to the AutoCAD drawings we give them.

The customers absolutely love it and they love that they have a company that provides them with that "extra" support. It builds us extra good will and helps promote a great product - win-win all the way.

This is NOT AutoCAD and it is not an Autodesk product and you should be aware that it will not read or be able to open AutoCAD 2007 format files. It can crash if the drawing size gets too big, so be sure to back up if you use it.

Look Who's Laughing

Some of you know that I compete in dog agility events with my border collie. This puts me on several email lists for agility events. Every once in a while I get a story or article that is too amusing to keep to myself.

In this case, researchers have determined that dogs indeed "laugh". In fact, they even sell a CD you can play for your dog when you leave him home alone. The CD is a collection of "dog laughter". This apparently calms down most dogs. Dogs apparently hear dog laughter and think it means that play-time is available.
