If you are an ADT user and you are not on subscription, pick up the phone and call your reseller today and get on subscription. Why? Because it will save you big bucks when ADT2007 gets released this spring and you will not only want to upgrade, you will NEED to upgrade.

That's because ADT2007 is a major improvement over what ADT2006 offers. The ADT team has really hit their target. Users who work with the space planning and structural tools will be especially happy with the improvements. Schedules have also moved a big step forward.

I'll be writing some tutorials for the new release, but even without my help the upgrade will be painless for most users - and a big productivity boost.

So, call your reseller today!
In Issue 33, I wrote about my reaction to the slower performance I have experienced using the AutoCAD 2007 beta. I heard from one person from Autodesk who wanted to know where I got my beta seat. (My lips are sealed...but it is always easier to blame the messenger, then listen to the message.)

I also heard from a few other beta testers who basically agreed with what I said. A couple of them really like the new gee-whiz 3D tools that will be unveiled in AutoCAD 2007. But even they admit that the slower performance is not a worthwhile trade-off.

However, there is a glimmer of hope on the horizon. The whole purpose of a beta is for the company to gather input from users and put final tweaks on the product. There is a chance that the Autodesk team can take a good look at the code and figure out a way to get back the speed AutoCAD 2005 gave us. Otherwise, we may have a year of tortoise-like performance while we wait for the 2008 release.

If AutoCAD2007 turns out to be the Year of the Tortoise for users, my advice would be to learn how to multi-task. Check your emails, make phone calls, write little notes, read one-minute articles in your favorite technical journal while you wait for your drawing to load.
Autodesk, Inc. (NASDAQ: ADSK) today announced that Carl Bass, the company’s chief operating officer, has been named president and chief executive officer, effective May 1, 2006. Bass also has been appointed to the company’s expanded Board of Directors, effective immediately.

Well, those will be big high heels for Carl to step into. But, one has to ponder...same initials, similar first names, close proximity to San Francisco....could Carl and Carol be one and the same person? Actually, I have seen them both in the same room at the same time, so - as amusing the concept might be - the answer is a resounding 'No'. They are very different individuals, with different management styles. However, Carol has been extremely successful managing the Autodesk helm and it will be interesting to see if Carl will be able to continue the streak of good fortune.
