Free Tutorial on ADT Elements
ADT 2005 introduces a new tool called the Project
Navigator that allows users to organize their project,
using constructs, sheets, and views.
One of the more challenging tasks for users is how to
leverage the use of constructs to add power to your
design. As usual, Autodesk's documentation is heavy
on the theory, light on the actual application. To
help you out, check out this free tutorial on how to
create and use an element in a facility layout. This is
an excerpt from my text on space planning, soon to
be released by my publisher, Schroff Development.

Greetings!
Happy Fourth of July to all my subscribers who live in
the States!
This Fourth of July pay special attention to your
pets...they may not appreciate all the noise. A lot of
dogs and cats run off during this weekend because
they get scared and lose their heads. So, keep your
furry friends close at hand and give them lots of
reassurance.

Working with Layouts, Titleblocks, and Fields in ADT2005

Things have shifted around quite a bit in 2005, so
users need to adjust the way they work.
The first problem is with locating a titleblock.
Titleblocks are now located under Documents and
Settings/All Users/Application Data/Autodesk/ADT
2005/enu/Template/AutoCAD Templates.
A quick and easy way to scale the selected titleblock
is to use the Reference Option for Scale.
- Select the Scale tool.
- Select the titleblock.
- Right click and select Reference.
- When prompted for the base point, enter 0,0.
- When prompted for the reference length, select
the lower left corner and the lower right corner of the
titleblock.
- When prompted for the new length, enter the
length of the layout sheet.
In the above image, you see a problem with
fields...controlling how to word wrap properly.
However, if you download the tutorial below, you'll
learn how to fix that problem by creating custom
detail fields.

Adobe Sponsors Next SVAPU Meeting

The next Silicon Valley AutoCAD Power Users Meeting
will be held July 8 at Adobe HQ in downtown San
Jose. Users will get a sneak peak at the latest Adobe
technology to pdf and mark up their documents.
That mild rumbling you may hear is the sounds of
discontent coming from San Rafael as Autodesk
department heads and staff grumble about SVAPU's
disregard for all things DWF.
Can you DWF AND PDF? Or must you pick a
technology and remain completely loyal. If you DWF
on some days and PDF on others, does that make
you a DWFloozy?
Keep in mind it costs NOTHING to DWF. DWFWriter
comes free with your Autodesk software. But every
computer on the planet comes with the Adobe
Reader, so sending a PDF to a customer or colleague
is painless.
Do you feel guilty if you PDF when you know you
should only DWF? After all, PDFing requires that your
company ante up the change for a copy of Adobe
Professional. In these hard econonic times, it's $450
or $150 for an upgrade. How can you expect your
boss to pop for that when DWF is free. Does PDFing
make you feel like you're throwing away money?
On the other hand, how much time and effort do you
have to put out explaining to a non-Autodesk user
how to DWF? Doesn't your time have any value?
Seems like you are going to pay one way or another.
Personally, I PDF...but some of my best friends DWF.
Will I shun you if you DWF? Absolutely NOT! I am
not a DWF-user hater. I believe in FREE choice when
it comes to disseminating data. Knowledge is
power...go to the SVAPU meeting and learn more
about it.

Stopping the Clock

We often create drawings from existing drawings then
save them off into a new file. I would like to be able
to use the "edit time" in properties to tell me how
long I truly spent on a drawing, but the 'save as'
feature does not reset that clock. Is there a way to
reset the edit time on a drawing for a more accurate
calculation?
COMMAND "._TIME" "RESET" "")
or from the command line: time [enter] reset [enter]
You also have the Express Tools command
"EDITTIME." This lets you set a timeout value that
stops the clock if you are idle for that length of time.
