CAD News Large and Small
Dear Elise,
Giving Fields some More Power

Now that users are starting to get the hang of fields (and finding them more and more addictive), many users are ready to move up to the next level.

Check out LiveLabel from AAC Solutions...this free add-in allows you to link object properties to fields. Basically, the software leverages the ability to use DIESEL expressions to create fields. I haven't used DIESEL in years (it sort of dropped out of favor for LISP)...but I am starting to bone up again. Readers can look forward to some tutorials on how to use DIESEL expressions in field creation in future issues of CADzette.

Comparing eDrawings and DWF Publisher

Autodesk is not going to like this...a third party has done a comparison test of files created by eDrawing Pro by SolidWorks and DWF using assembly files from Inventor. The tester used the sample assembly files that come with Inventor as their benchmark.

eDrawings won hands down...file sizes were smaller and the creation times for eDrawings were consistently HALF the creation times for DWF files. (Refer to the table) This is NOT a small matter. Someone recently commented in Ralph Grabowski's ezine that SolidWorks is doing a better job of supporting Autodesk customers than Autodesk. This benchmark test is solid evidence that this comment is not far from the mark.

Inventor Symbols with a bit More Pizzazz

When you are editing the defintion of the symbol - after you type the text and are out of the text dialog box. Right click on the text and pick text box. now you can make that box any size and the text will wrap within that box.

This allows you to create symbols where the text will automatically go to the next line if the characters get too long.

Sheet Set Manager Tips

Some users of SSM in AutoCAD 2005 don't want "---- " to show up on the plotted drawing when a property is empty. Using a space character as a workaround to not getting "----" doesn't work. It doesn't stay if the drawing is saved, closed and then opened. What on the other hand stays is entering ALT-0160 (Non-break Space) on the keyboard followed by an enter. To do it hold down the ALT key and type the numbers 0 1 6 0 on the numeric keypad. This only works if you are using a TrueType font, shx fonts will display a ?...which still might be preferred to the ---.
