    Watch Movies On-Line

Last year, the Sundance Film Festival charged people to see the short films on their website. However, this year film buffs can watch mini-movies for FREE.

You'll need a high speed connection (DSL or better), but if you can arrange to download them, you will see some talented young film-makers who don't have the backing yet to make a feature length film.

Pass the popcorn and watch a movie...

    Moss Designs Website Updated
Every quarter I update my website....I add the CADzettes that have been sent out from the prior quarter, add the tutorials, lisp routines, and tips to the appropriate pages, and perform general clean up operations.

For those of you who missed an issue, this is your opportunity to go back and see what you might have missed.

I have had a few complaints from folks that I should update my website more frequently, but I also actually work (interesting concept) and the tasks that put food on my table (or hay in my horse's belly) take priority over the "free" stuff I do, like this ezine and the website...although the "free" stuff hopefully encourages readers to hire me for training, designing, or speaking.

Troubleshooting Runtime Errors in Inventor R9
Recently, one of my customers had a problem with a runtime error with a new seat of Inventor R9. They were running Windows XP SP2.

The first thing users should be aware of with regards to runtime errors and Inventor is that the error message is pretty meaningless. Usually, it indicates a conflict between Inventor, the operating system, system drivers, or another software. It can be a huge time sinkhole trying to figure out what is causing the problem and there is no real process to go through to eliminate each possible cause.

There is a known conflict between XP SP2 and Inventor R9. One way is to set Inventor R9 to run in a Windows 2000 environment. To do this, simply right click on the Inventor R9 desktop icon. Select Properties. Then select the Compatibility tab. Set it to Windows 2000.

In this particular case, the customer was running eFax on their machine...and there happens to be a known conflict between eFax and jFax and Inventor.

    Bryan Kelley from Autodesk reports:

We have found that there is a conflict with their software and Inventor. If you have either eFax software or J2 Fax software, you will have a difficult time running Inventor. You can alleviate this problem by stopping a process called J2GDllCmd.exe inside of Task Manager. To do this you will need to:

    1. Exit any eFax or J2 communications software.
    2. Bring up Task Manager
    3. Press OR Right-Mouse click on the Taskbar and select Task Manager
    4. Select the Processes tab.
    5. Find the process called J2GDllCmd.exe, if you find any other file beginning with J2 repeat the following steps on that file too.
    6. Right-Mouse click on it.
    7. Select End Process Tree
    8. Select Yes.

I'm sure that you could also instruct the fax program not to load during startup.

Other users have been able to resolve the run-time error by updating their video drivers...It is always a good idea to check for driver updates every six months or so, just to make sure you have the latest and greatest installed.

Layer Manager Opens Slowly in 2005
Many users are complaining about how slowly the Layer Manager loads in 2005. Autodesk has posted a fix.

    Free Lisp Routine
I've been busy with some drafting duties and had a problem in that I had several blocks on my drawing that needed to be scaled down. So, I wrote this down and dirty lisp routine....basically, it prompts you to select the object, select the base point, and then automatically scales it down by half.

I then created a tool for it on my tool palette...works great and saves me several steps.

Importing a Page Setup from another Drawing
This week I have been struggling with layouts, xrefs, and page setups.

One cool command I have discovered is PSETUPIN. You can use this command to import a page setup from an existing/legacy/standard/template drawing into your current/active drawing. Saves a little time from having to re-create the wheel.

But the big headache was the ability to apply a page setup to all my layouts at a single shot...instead of selecting each layout and resetting it. Many kudos and much gratitude to Jason Piercey, who wrote an awesome routine that does just that.
