Want to Surf the Net Safely?
If you're one of about 200 million people using older
versions of Windows and you want the latest security
enhancements to Internet Explorer, get your credit
card ready.
Microsoft this week reiterated that it would keep the
new version of Microsoft's IE Web browser available
only as part of the recently released Windows XP
operating system, Service Pack 2. The upgrade to XP
from any previous Windows versions is $99 when
ordered from Microsoft. Starting from scratch, the
operating system costs $199.

Stopping Spoofers
Spoofing, for those of you who don't know, is identity
theft of your email address or your domain. Basically, a
spammer uses your email address or domain name as a
cover when they send email.
When this happens, you may get bounced email that
you never sent or you could get nasty emails from
people who didn't appreciate the spam - that you didn't
send.
Recently, I learned about this tool available for you to
place on your domain. Ask your ISP to implement this
utility - it is FREE!!!! If every ISP puts this in place,
spoofing will basically disappear.

Raster to Vector in Autodesk Raster Design 2005
Well, after struggling with Autodesk Raster Design
2005, I just about gave up. The help files are just too
oblique for me.
Ok, so first before you vectorize, you have to convert
your image file to bitonal (black and white). You do
this by going to Image->Histogram, select the
Threshold tab and then adjust the threshold value until
you get a decent contrast. Next, apply and OK.
Now that your image is bitonal, do a saveas to make
sure it is OK. You do this by selecting the image, right
click, Write->SaveAs. (Explain to me why you need
that extra Write, ok?)
Then, hello, the method to vectorize is basically to
trace over the image using Line, Arc, Circle...this is the
method I used back in the 80's...and why did I need to
go through all the bitonal garbage...why do I even
NEED Raster Design if that is what I have to do?
You are basically required to draw the image over from
scratch! That is basically useless for, oh, 90% of us.
Luckily, a kind user in Autodesk's Raster Design
Discussion forum pointed me to
a freeware software called Wintopo that allows you to
select the image and will vectorize it in one shot.

Free Screen Capture Program
Every once in a while someone will email me and ask me
how I create/capture images from my Autodesk
software. I use Hypersnap which is a low-cost
software.
However, recently I was stuck at a workstation that
didn't have it...so I was forced to go out and look for a
free screen capture software...
I lucked out....ScreenHunter is completely free, doesn't
expire, and doesn't add any stupid watermarks, etc. to
your screen captures. It has all the features that
SnagIt and Hypersnap have...but it's free. Hey, that's
in everybody's price range.
