The Natives Are Restless

Many AUGI members have become fed up with the length of time the AUGI website has been down...access to the forums and ATP has been cut off. To bring you up to date, the webhost AUGI pays to manage the site was attacked by a computer virus/worm. The server lost all of AUGI's data....and, major bummer, the AUGI team had not made complete back-ups of the site.

For many users this means that the only on-line support they can get is to use the Autodesk Discussion forums, but some users prefer to go someplace where they don't have to worry about being censored.

Randall Rath, along with a band of renegade coders, has set up an alternate website for Autodesk users. The site features forums, tips & tricks, free downloads and even an enticing prize. The CAD Vault is running a "Refer A Friend" contest!

The Prize?

A Creative Labs Zen Xtra 40GB MP3 player ($299.99 retail price), graciously provided by the Open Design Alliance!

Oh gosh, just for the prize you should go over and register (did I mention it's free?), check out the website and be sure to refer a friend or coworker.

Keynoting in ADT2005

So, I have spent the past two weeks tearing my hair out over keynoting in ADT2005. Could they have made it any MORE complicated?

The Keynotes in ADT 2005 are based on the Construction Specifications Institute Masterformat standard. The idea is you create a database using Microsoft Access. The database is organized around the standard, which groups keynotes based on material and application (site plan, elevation, etc.).

ADT comes with a template that acts as a starting point if you want to create your own keynote database. The template is located in the following directory: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Applciation Data\Autodesk\ADT 2005 \enu\Template\Details and Keynote. You want to use the AecKeynotes-Template.mdb file.

From talking with users, I understand how being able to organize and access keynotes easily can be a huge productivity boost. I am working on a tutorial to walk you through how to create and use your own keynote database using the CSI document as my starting point. If you want to check out the standard, you can download it below.

The New Generation Gap

Working as a computer instructor for an adult- education program at a community college, I am keenly aware of the gap in computer knowledge between my younger and older students.

My observations were confirmed the day a new student walked into our library area and glanced at the encyclopedia volumes stacked on a bookshelf.

"What are all these books?" he asked.

Somewhat surprised, I replied that they were encyclopedias.

"Really?" he said. "Someone printed out the whole thing?"
