Developer Seeks Input from Users
René Bastarache, of DE GRANDS DESSINS, has
developed two new shareware add-ons for use with
AutoCAD.
NumCAD provides you with the ability to create short-
cuts or use a pop-up pad to enter in distance values.
No more typing or typos!
Dimlay sets the right layer when you are adding
measurement annotation to a drawing and reverts to
the previous layer once this is done. If a layer name
containing the word "Dim" is present in a drawing,
Dimlay will set this layer as the current layer for the
dimensions.
Dimlay will automatically create and set a layer
named "Dim" as the current layer for the dimensions.
Rene is looking for feedback from users. He would like
you to try his software for free and let him know what
improvements you would like to see and how much you
would be willing to pay.

New ASME 3D Modeling Standard
3D modeling is the future of design, and ASME Y14.41
sets the rules. It extends ASME Y14.5M into the 3D
world.
The Y14.41 standard establishes requirements and
references documents applicable to the preparation and
revision of digital product definition data, referred to as
data sets. Y14.41 defines the exceptions and additional
requirements to existing ASME standards for using
product definition data sets or drawings in 3D digital
format. This standard supports two methods of
application: model only, and model and drawing in
digital format.

Update for File Corruption Issues when Saving File to Previous Release or in DXF Format
Data corruption can occur if an AutoCAD® Mechanical
customer sets this option to anything other than the
default "AutoCAD 2004" drawing setting - AutoCAD
Mechanical 2004 will not properly save the file. Another
method in which users could corrupt their data,
involves using the DXFOUT, ETRANSMIT or Save as
AutoCAD 2004, or you perform any another type of file
export operation. If you save the file after any of these
operations, the file becomes corrupted.
This update also includes support for those users
having trouble installing on Windows NT® SP6a.

Try Autodesk's New Express Viewer FREE!
Autodesk is discontinuing Volo View Express in favor of
a different viewer that works with the 2004 file format.
You can download it for free from the link below:
Regardless, both viewers require that you plot out to
DWF in order to see your file. To create a DWF file, set
up your plot as you normally would and then select the
DWF driver as your plot device instead of your regular
plotter.
Autodesk Express Viewer is a free, lightweight, high-
performance application for viewing and printing DWF
(Design Web Format) files. Autodesk Express Viewer
enables users to view DWF files using the advanced
graphics systems found in many of the Autodesk design
products. Autodesk Express Viewer has a very flexible
printing system that enables users to print to scale, fit
to page, tile, or selectively print a variety of layouts
from the new DWF 6 publishing format. Autodesk
Express Viewer is available as both a stand alone
application or as a control that is used within the MSIE
browser, providing a simple, easy to use, and common
Windows interface for even the novice user to master
viewing and printing of design data.

Some great FREE Tools available from ACADx
OK, let's say you have 1,000 drawings. You need to
change the company name from PeopleSoft to Oracle
(sorry, Silicon Valley humor) in the titleblock. Do you
tediously open each drawing and make the change?
Or do you use this great utility from ACADx called
SFIND?
To give you an idea of how fast SFIND is, it was tested
with a directory containing 1000 drawings, half of which
contained 50 entities with text that matched the
search term. SFIND searched all of these drawings, and
found and replaced the 50 text entities in each of the
500 files in under 2 minutes (test platform: P4/2Ghz,
1GB RAM, 2 x 120 GB RAID 0/1 disk array). Of course,
your mileage may vary.
There are some great utilities on this site that are
guaranteed to make your life more pleasant.
