  • Greetings!

Inventor R8 Intermediate Text Now Available!

My Inventor R8 Intermediate text is now available. I have expanded the section on VBA fo those users who are interested in customizing and boosting Inventor's power.

This text also includes information on how to create a shortcut in Inventor - a new feature in R8.

You can download a sample chapter from the publisher's website. If you are an instructor, please contact the publisher to get your free copy of the text.

Have you ever wanted to work in true 3D?
The Sharp Actius RD3D is the world's first autostereo 3D notebook. Sharp Corporation's TFT 3D LCD technology makes it possible to view eye-popping 3D images without special glasses.

The notebook, which retails for about $5,000, features a 2.8Ghz CPU, 512MB SDRAM (expandable to 1024), a 15" display, and comes with Windows XP Professional installed.

    Lock a Layer with VBA
Four different events could be used to keep a layer locked. Below is a VBA example that keeps a layer named "Layer1" locked. The EndCommand locks Layer1 if the layer command was run. The ObjectModified changes a global flag to true when the Toolbar is used to unlock the layer. When a command is started the BeginCommand checks this flag and locks the layer. The SelectionChanged event checks this flag and locks the layer when an entity is selected.

To test this example, download the code from the link below. Then, copy it into the ThisDrawing module in the VBA editor

    Try out Vue 4 Professional
A free trial version of e-on software's Vue 4 Professional 3D natural scenery studio is available for download. You must register to download and use it. The trial is fully functional, but you can't save or export. Rendering is limited to 640 X 480 resolution and animations can run only five seconds. The software runs on Windows and Mac OS X.

With its intuitive, production-oriented layout, you will quickly create and enhance your production with incredible wind-swept SolidGrowth 3 trees and plants, volumetric atmospheres and rich terrains in fully animated scenes.

    Win an iPod!
Autodesk is holding a drawing to give a free iPod to all those who download their DWF Viewer. Heck, I'd download it just for the shot at the iPod...don't need to install it.

With Autodesk Express Viewer, a small, free, downloadable application, you can view and print DWF files. What you see is exactly what the designer intended, because the information cannot be changed.

Civil 3D Object Enabler Now Available
Autodesk posted a Civil 3D object enabler for use in its AutoCAD 2004- based lineup of products. It lets those products display and access objects created in the Civil 3D product.

To go from LDD to Civil 3D
You want to import project data from Autodesk Land Desktop into Autodesk Civil 3D.

The ARX file the General > Import Data From Land Desktop command uses must be manually loaded before you can use the command for the first time.

    1. On the command line, enter APPLOAD.
    2. In the Load/Unload Applications dialog box, under Startup Suite, click Contents.
    3. In the Startup Suite dialog box, click Add.
    4. Locate the \Civil\AeccUiDataMigration10.arx file, and click Add.
    5. In the Startup Suite dialog box, click Close.
    6. In the Load/Unload Applications dialog box, click Close.
    7. On the General menu, click Import Data From Land Desktop.

By adding the ARX file to the Startup Suite, the ARX file will automatically load each time you start Autodesk Civil 3D.

    MYSTERY'S SWEET SOLUTION
It's a question important to shippers, merchants and experts in packaging: What shape allows you to pack the most objects in a container?

    The answer: M&Ms.

A research team led by mathematician Aleksander Donev at Princeton University found that M&Ms (oblate spheroids, in their language) can be packed much more densely than ball bearings.

The result, according to commentary by David Weitz of Harvard University, ``explains why eating M&Ms for lunch one by one always takes longer than eating a bag of spherical candies of the same total volume.''

    Creating Chinese MTEXT with VBA
The problem in creating Chinese text is with the text style associated with the default MTEXT setting. Changing only the True Font in the Characters drop down box (in the MTEXT dialog) doesn't help in this case. We should make sure that there is at least one text style that can display Chinese properly. To make that happen, create a new text style with Style command, use big font by enabling the Big Font check box in the Text Style dialog, choose gbcbig.shx for Simplified Chinese or Chinese.shx for Traditional Chinese, last save the style definition and close the dialog.
