  • Greetings!

Free Pro/Desktop Offer About to Expire

Pro/DESKTOP Express has run its course and will be discontinued as of December 31, 2003. To accommodate any existing users who may wish to extend their use of Pro/DESKTOP Express beyond the timeframe provided by the current license key, below are instructions on how to manually change the license key and extend your current license to a 5-year license. It is important to note that users must take action to re-register Pro/DESKTOP Express by December 31, 2003 in order to receive this extended license key. After December 31, license keys for Pro/DESKTOP Express will no longer be available.

Pro/Desktop is a Pro/E CAD program that allows users to create, edit, and save Pro/E files. It does not have the full functionality of Pro/E - think of it as Pro/E's equivalent to AutoCAD LT.

However, it is a great tool if you have Pro/E files you need to open and edit and even as a basic 3D CAD modeling tool.

And you can't beat the price - it is FREE!

    To download and register...

    Download AU Course Materials
If you weren't able to attend AU (or even if you were and weren't able to get in all the classes you desired), you can download the course materials for free for a limited time.

The password to enter the site is outthere.

Dates for Autodesk University 2004 will be November 30 - December 3 in Las Vegas. Check out these materials and you'll see why you should reserve the dates now, so you don't miss out!

    Tips and Bits
The Cookie Cutter trim tool in AutoCAD 2004 has been renamed to extrim <------------------------------------->

A user creates a viewport in a Layout and scaled it to 1:100. If he then creates a new viewport in the same layout and double clicks in it ( to get into MS) both viewports zoom to the extents and regen. This happens every time he enters MS in a viewport.

To prevent this: set up one viewport, then set it to Display Locked = yes. Then set up the other viewport and lock it. This works OK

This setup uses the UCSFOLLOW system variable. UCSFOLLOW needs to be set to 0 in each viewport individually. <-------------------------------------------------->

To turn off Hatch Patterns, type FILL, OFF. <--------------------------------------------------->

    Right click bug in 2004?

Select Offset. Specify the offset distance, typing it at the command line, and then press enter. Then press and hold the Ctrl key to cycle through some overlapping lines until the one desired is highlighted. Right-click and it cancels the entire operation!

If when finishing the cycle you use the enter key instead of right clicking the mouse, it will work properly.

Setting Up Layer Properties in AutoCAD Electrical
If you recently acquired AutoCAD Electrical, it probably did not take you too long to realize that you want to get under the hood and set up AE to use the layer standards for your company.

The layer properties in AE are controlled using the WD_M.dwg file. If you modify this file, you can set up the layers to look the way you want.

    SDI v. MDI
Some lisp and VBA utlities may force your AutoCAD or ADT software into single document mode (SDI). How to force it back into multiple document mode (MDI)?

The difference between the modes is pretty obvious...SDI is how AutoCAD worked back in R13 - you can only have one file open at a time. Remember the days when you had more than one session of AutoCAD open in order to work in multiple drawings? Remember when you'd be in the middle of your work and a co- worker would come in and make you close your drawing, so you could look at an entirely different file?

It is controlled from the SDI system variable. Type SDI on the command line.

    • 0 Turns on multiple-drawing interface.
    • 1 Turns off multiple-drawing interface.
    • 2 (Read-only) Multiple-drawing interface is disabled because AutoCAD has loaded an application that does not support multiple drawings. SDI setting 2 is not saved.
    • 3 (Read-only) Multiple-drawing interface is disabled because the user has set SDI to 1 and AutoCAD has loaded an application that does not support multiple drawings. (SDI was set to 1 before the application was loaded.) SDI setting 3 is not saved.

To work in MDI mode, set SDI to 0.

Free Utility to help Boost performance on HP Systems
If you own an HP Intel Pentium 4/Xeon-based workstations, you can use a free utility offered by HP to boost performance on your workstation.

HP Performance Tuning Framework will guide your system setup allowing a "custom" configuration that best matches the workstation to user requirements. This customization ensures availability of the latest graphics cards and drivers and removes some memory restraints.

The Framework is currently supported only on Hewlett- Packard's Intel Pentium 4/Xeon-based workstations running either Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional or Windows XP Professional.

If you don't own an HP, don't dispair. Your desktop manufacturer may offer a similar utility. It is a good idea to visit the website for the manufacturer of your motherboard, memory, monitor, and graphics card at least quarterly to check for updated drivers and utilities.

Microsoft Office/Exchange Server - Reduce Spam
Take control of your junk email today! With Microsoft Office 2003 and Microsoft Exchange Server 2003, you don't need to be bothered with junk email ever again. On the Tools menu, choose Options and then click Junk E-mail. Then, Select the protection level that you want.

    • *No protection Although this turns off the automatic Junk E-mail Filter, Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 will continue to evaluate messages by using domain names and e-mail addresses on your Blocked Senders List, and messages will continue to be moved to your Junk E-mail folder.
    • *Low If you don't receive many junk e-mail messages and want to see all but the most obvious junk messages, you should select this option.
    • *High If you receive a large volume of junk e-mail messages, you should select this option. However, you should periodically review the messages moved to your Junk E-mail folder, because some wanted messages may be moved there as well.
    • *Safe Lists Only Any e-mail messages sent from someone not on your Safe Senders List or sent to a mailing list not on the Safe Recipients List will be treated as junk e-mail messages.

You can also choose to have junk email messages saved in the Junk E-mails folder or permanently deleted upon detection. To select one of these options, choose Tools - Options - Junk E-mail and either select or deselect the Permanently delete suspected junk e- mail instead of moving it to the Junk E-mail folder check box.

    Reducing File Size?
Denny Dischke complains that his files in AutoCAD2000 have grown to 18 MB+ and are becoming more and more difficult to manage. What's a fellow to do?

My first choice is to run a purge on the file. You have no idea how much "garbage" your file can accumulate just due to editing changes, etc. You can use the PURGE command, of course. However, the WBLOCK command actually does a SUPERPURGE, minus the obnoxious prompts and dialog. Simply type WBLOCK on your command line, enable the entire drawing option. Set the path and file name for the purged drawing and press OK.

Compare your file sizes and you will be pleasantly surprised. There is no way to get an 18 MB+ file below 1 MB, but with purging and then using zip, you might get it under 10 MB.
