Microsoft Releases Fix for Windows 2000 SP4 Problems |
 |
Microsoft released a temporary Hotfix for the
problematic Hotfix
823980 that appears in Windows 2000 Service Pack 4
and corrupts MAX
and DRF files. If you installed Hotfix 823980 on the
English-
language version of Windows 2000/XP or Service Pack 4
on Windows
2000, you can request Microsoft Hotfix Q824136 by
calling
800.936.4900. Microsoft will e-mail the 1MB file. Note
that the fix
works only if you've already installed the previous Hotfix
or
Service Pack, as described above.
Spam Statistics
Everyday 3 million spam emails are sent out. Of
those, 300 generate actual sales.
This makes spammers more determined than
cockroaches when you figure the odds.
It does cause problems for some of the folks who want
to subscribe to this enewsletter. Many ISPs have
specifically filtered against the service I use for this
newsletter because some of their customers are also
spammers. You can work around this by using a
different email address. If I get too many more
complaints, I will switch services.
More importantly, if you decide you don't want

MDT v. Inventor |
 |
|
In Sydney, I met Paul Waddington, an Autodesk
Reseller, who uses MDT in his work and who has trained
several users here on MDT.
They are avid MDT users and not willing to switch to
Inventor. Paul has set up a website where he calls for
CAD users to take control of the market and not allow
Autodesk and other CAD vendors to bully us into
upgrades and switch-overs.
If you have more than a few minutes (Paul does not go
for the succinct), you can read his opinions on why
CAD users should call Autodesk into account for failing
to properly support them with the required tools, and
instead delivering some marketing fellow's idea of a
feature.
While Autodesk may consider AutoCAD a mature
product, Paul and his colleagues in Australia believe it
still has a lot of growth potential and he details exactly
how Autodesk can improve their products and grow
their market without pissing off their loyal customer
base.
As I warned, Paul is wordy - but I would
recommend you take a look at the link during
your lunch hour or some off time and read what he says.
To see some great MDT drawings and read up on Paul's Manifesto! »

Inventor 7 Professional - Tubing & Piping |
 |
Well, I finally got a chance to sit down and play around
with the new Tubing & Piping module in Inventor 7
Professional. At first, I was annoyed because the
results looked more like Chutes and Ladders than
anything I wanted to see. But then, I found the
getting started tutorial (it's a pdf file that gets installed
with the software) and the sun came out.
It took me less than an hour to get control of the
Medusa piping beast once I walked through the
tutorials. Phew, I felt much better...but I don't have
much use for tubing or piping in my work - now wiring
and cabling, that's what I need. This will be tackled
with the new IDF import feature available in the next
release.
But for those who can't wait, you can create your own
libraries and start using those parts NOW. So, I am
going to be creating a library of PANDUIT parts for use
in the Tubing and Piping toolbox. I will still be able to
use them when the IDF feature is released.
To access the Tube & Piping Library, so you can create
your own tube, wiring, or piping components, simply use
the Drop-down next to Model.

ADT 2004 Viz Render Tips |
 |
|
ADT 2004 comes with a new Viz Render module. This is
a new rendering environment that is a huge step
forward.
The Content Browser can not be initiated from within
VIZ Render. It is a separate application which can be
run from AecCB.exe in explorer or from within
Autodesk® Architectural Desktop 2004.
The Substitution Manager accessed from the Utility tab
of the Command Panel allows the replacement of
Autodesk Architectural Desktop 2004 objects or blocks,
with max files. In most cases, a block is a
representation of the actual three dimensional object.
As an example, 2D furniture blocks in a model could
easily be substituted for 3D detailed furniture blocks.
The feature is made more useful by the fact that it
becomes an intelligent placeholder upon linked
geometry reloads even when representative block
locations have been moved, created or deleted.
The EASYnat plug-in enables you to add realistic 3D
vegetation to their models. With the 4 sample plants
shipped with this version, you can easily add a natural
touch of realism to their renderings. Plants are both
accessible from the Design Center within Autodesk
Architectural Desktop 2004 as Multi-View Blocks and
from within VIZ Render, from the EASYnat menu. You
can generate the 4 plant models at different ages and
seasons, adjust the height, diameter and Level of
Detail, however these sub object controls are not able
to be animated.

MREDO - NEW 2004 SYSTEM VARIABLE |
 |
|
Reverses the effects of several previous UNDO or U
commands
With the addition of the MREDO command in AutoCad
2004, an opportunity presents itself for those of use
who use the keyboard for most of our commands. One
command that's used very frequently is UNDO, which
uses keyboard shortcut U. Usually I find myself hitting
this and hitting ENTER multiple times quickly to back up
through several operations. Once in a while, however, I
find that I didn't really want to undo all that work. The
only problem, as I see it, is there is no equivalent
method to quickly and easily, from the keyboard, REDO
back those undone operations. This is where MREDO
comes in handy. But, the command line interface
requires you enter the command, then the number of
operations (or All, or Last). This turns into a large
number of keystrokes rather quickly. That's why I've
written a little AutoLISP shortcut to turn this command
into a quick keyboard method (see the LISP code
below). I've taken the R shortcut (formerly of Redraw
fame) and redefined it to run MREDO, with a default of
1 operation. Since Blipmode was the primary cause for
needing a Redraw, and most of us have divorced
ourselves of those annoying little marks (called Blips) by
turning this setting off, the R comes in handy as a
parallel shortcut to the U. Of course you can change
this to whatever keyboard shortcut you like. Here's the
code:
(defun c:R () (command "mredo" " 1")
(princ) )
Once you perform a SAVE command, both the Undo and
Mredo lists are re-initialized and, in effect, you start
your lists anew.
