My Vegas Trip

For those who are following my personal escapades, your heroine was last seen in Vegas the weekend following AU hoping to play some softball with my team.

On the plane, I overheard some male players talking about all the "illegal" teams competing in the tournament.  A and B ranked teams had changed their team names and entered to compete in the C and D  ranks in order to better their odds of getting a trophy.

Now, I play D league.   You really can't play any lower.  My team is great when we are evenly matched, and if we hit a ball into the outfield, we're pretty happy.

So, we spent the weekend playing Amazons, women who towered over us, hit the ball as good as any guy, and basically being humiliated.  My team took it in good humor...we just like to play.  We lost 18-2, 21-1, and 19-3.  The fact that we scored at all is a testament to how good we really are.

I was also peeved because Title IX was definitely not in effect.  The guys got to play on the nicer fields with the snack bars while those of us who can't pee standing up were relegated to the swamp lands.  The tournament folks did set up a table where we could buy tournament shirts and hoodies.  All in size XL or bigger.  What genius stocks a table at a woman's game and doesn't throw in some smalls and mediums?  The guy running the table said he was surprised by all the women who wanted to buy something but couldn't find anything in their size.

On the plus side, we lost quickly and were bounced out of the tournament, leaving plenty of time to see the sights.  I had brought my 11 year old son for his first taste of Vegas.  He had a fabulous time.  He especially liked the Star Trek exhibit at the Hilton.  I was struck by how many of the family-oriented attractions are no longer around.

Next year AU will be in Vegas again.  I won't be.

The Road to a 3D Standard
Ragnar Thor Mikkelsen from Norway suggested I try to download a trial version of Rhino and see if that solved my 3DS to SW conversion problem.

Well, I had already wasted two days trying to get my 3D model to come into SolidWorks...why not?

I should preface this by saying I am not a Rhino user.  I love it when people tell me I should try this or that software.  I love all software.  I am an equal opportunity software user.  I wish I could sit in my cubicle all day and just play with new user interfaces and try out new ways of creating models.  Unfortunately, nobody wants to pay me to do this (man does not live on free T-shirts alone).  So, I try to limit new software package usages...otherwise, I am totally diluting my ability to make a living.

I downloaded and installed Rhino with NO problems.  That is always a good start.  Rhino opened the 3DS model with no problem.  I saved it to a Rhino format (3dm) with zero issues.

However, the 3DS model is a mesh, so I used up my alloted Saves pretty quickly trying to come up with a format that I thought could be brought into SolidWorks.

None of the formats worked, so I went back to Sycode's Mesh to Solid tool.  I downloaded the version for Rhino and it installed with no problems.  Note:  I did not have to play the CUI, ARXload game I did with AutoCAD.  It was added to the menu automatically and was accessed with no problems.

However, when I tried to run the Mesh to Solid conversion, Rhino stalled on the 87th step and basically froze.

I tried bringing the 3dm Rhino file into SolidWorks, but since it was a mesh, it didn't work.  Likewise, none of the other format file types worked.  Another strike-out.

Another Crack at a Civil Lisp

Thanks to my good friend, Priscilla Mills, who gently chided me on my elev-lab routine.  She emailed...

Also, I was excited about the lisp in last week's Cadzette. However, when I went to use it, I found it didn't do quite what Alan asked for (in case no one else has replied on this).

The slope expressed as a percentage is what we use in Civil, as in: 1' drop over 100'  is "100LF @ 1.0%" (also expressed as 100LF S=0.01).
That comes out as 100LF @ 0.57° with your routine. Not very useful as is. I just have no idea how to make the conversions. Help?

Well, I felt pretty lousy about that...so I cleaned up the routine, fixed it and emailed it to Priscilla to try out.  So, with her blessings, here it is again.

This is what happens when you ask an ME to do something for a CE.  I am more than happy to try to create lisps for people outside of my field, but don't expect me to understand what you are doing.
